Dave Swanson, chairman and CEO of RHD, was recognized as the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Carolina region. Three years ago Swanson and team packed up their boxes and moved from Purchase, N.Y., to Cary, N.C. This was a gutsy decision — since he had to uproot many native northeasterners from their homes and communities.
In retrospect, he probably wonders why anyone would have wanted to stay in Purchase given the clear corporate and personal benefits of living in North Carolina. Besides, the company has grown considerably since moving south — purchasing the SBC interest in the DonTech partnership a couple of years ago — and most recently adding Dex to the company portfolio.
Perhaps Swanson will garner the national Ernst & Young award. For that one he’ll have to travel west to Southern California, which would be a bit of poetic justice. It was there nearly two decades ago that Dave was fighting a fierce battle as an independent Yellow Pages publisher in Southern California.
