Related to the integration of location awareness into Firefox that we’ve blogged about, the browser has just reached 20 percent market share. This is pretty impressive for a browser that doesn’t come bundled with the majority of PCs and laptops that are shipped, and is telling of its appeal over Internet Explorer.

This also has implications for the assimilation and adoption of location awareness as a key tool in local search, as it is developed for Firefox. Google’s new Chrome browser will also have this capability, which further pushes it into the market.

Firefox’s creeping penetration, along with Google’s entrance into the browser game, also signals a resurgence of the long-quiet browser wars. Firefox and Chrome should continue to ramp up, meaning the pack will tighten in the race for browser market share.
